DeepLabs is a new record label out of Detroit created and managed by Detroit producer and DJ Luke Hess. After several highly successful releases on labels such as FXHE, Echocord, Beretta Grey, & Kontra-Musik and celebrated remixes on Ornaments, Pong Musiq, and Modelisme, Luke has decided to take his style of Deep Detroit Techno and root it firmly in the city that inspires his sound. DeepLabs is a label created for the deeper, soulful, and experimental side of electronic music, with a clear vision of the DJ and the dance-floor. Luke constantly finds inspiration in his faith in God, nature, and science, which are all present in the message behind the music and the atmosphere and detail of the soundscapes. The vision behind the label is not only an outlet for creative experimentation in dance-music, but a channel that aims to convey a deep message of hope in a world of disillusionment and superficiality.

Each release is meant to focus on a particular theme that all of humanity struggles with, and offer clear answers and simple instruction. The effects of evil are seen throughout the world, from our disregarded and decaying cities, to our prideful conquests for power, money, and control. All of these world issues can be traced to the fallible heart of man, and the dirt can be found in each one of us. It is our responsibility to allow for change in our own lives before we can change the world around us. DeepLabs – Detroit is a platform for this change.

The first release on DeepLabs titled “Sound Mind EP” is meant to inspire the listener to hear and think clearly and carefully. Many hidden details can be found on the A side titled “Incline Your Ear”. Lush analog textures and tape delays play off each other to create a deep danceable groove, which sets up the wild outbursts of an alien-like horn that drives the track into the peak hours of the night. We must carefully analyze the information and ideas the world and popular culture has to offer, we may find we have to reject some of it before it reflects in our character.

Track B1, titled “Quick to Hear” is a classic style Detroit Techno track with spacey drone pads, playful bass-line, and analog rhythms. This track is meant to explore the prudent side of the dance floor; it’s for DJ’s who have a plan and enjoy setting up the night before the peak hours of a set. It’s also meant to address choosing our steps wisely before we act, since our actions can have such a profound impact on our own lives and the lives of others.

The last track on the B side “Slow to Speak” is a drone-like sleeper track made for the long early morning hours on the dance-floor. Consistent rhythms, rough stabs and rich pads inject power for the listener and for the DJ to confirm that the night isn’t over just yet. Similarly, we all can become beat-down and desensitized by life, but it is in our best interest to keep fighting the good fight and find strength and wisdom from our trials, which will help us to keep pressing on until the sun rises on us once again.
